The Mets finally quieted Shohei Ohtani’s bat in his final New York appearance before free agency this winter, and two late rallies helped them avoid a weekend sweep by the Angels.

David Peterson tossed seven innings of one-run ball in his longest start of the season, until Rafael Ortega’s bases-loaded single in the ninth sent the Mets to a 3-2 walk-off win Sunday at Citi Field to halt their four-game losing skid.

“Pete’s very quietly been real competitive for us. That was the key to the game, his outing, regardless of everything else that could be talked about,” Buck Showalter said about Peterson afterward. “We needed a starter to get deep in the game and Pete dialed that up for us.

Mets Option David Peterson to Triple-A After Horrific Start to 2023 Season

The Mets had hoped David Peterson would be a valuable fill-in for the rotation, but after another rough outing in Friday’s loss to Atlanta, the lefty was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Saturday. Peterson has struggled in most of his six starts this season, with a 7.34 ERA.

He pitched well for four innings in Friday’s loss to the Braves before allowing four runs in the fifth. Peterson, who has spent his entire career with the Mets after drafting the pitcher in 2017, won just one of his first six starts in 2023.

So easy to say that with an opportunity to pitch regularly in the starting rotation, Peterson should have tried harder. But that’s not how it works.
