Mets Sweep Oakland A’s Call Up Brett Baty

16 Apr

Yeah, Edgardo Escobar has been really, really bad to start off 2023. But I thought with the Mets paying him $10M this year, Baty’s subpar defense at 3rd base and the team still doing pretty well outside of the Brewers sweep, that they would give Escobar until May (or around 100 at-bats) to start turning things around before calling Baty up. But Mets fans have been killing Escobar online lately and literally begging Billy Eppier to make the move and Escobar has literally done nothing to warrant him keeping his starting job. Go figure.

Mets Acquire All-Star Pitcher Chris Bassist in Trade with Oakland A’s

Chris Bassitt
NYPost.com:

With options on the free-agent starting pitching market thin, the Mets on Saturday opted for a trade. In another “win now” move, the team acquired right-hander Chris Bassitt from the Athletics for pitching prospects J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller, sources confirmed. The move gave the Mets their second new rotation piece, joining Max Scherzer.

Bassitt, 33, went 12-4 with a 3.15 ERA in 27 starts last season, which included his first career All-Star appearance.

This is definitely a ‘win now’ move because Bassist is in his walk year, which while giving him extra motivation to pitch well in 2022, doesn’t bode well for the Mets longterm. Either way, this trade relives me of my biggest concern which was acquiring a quality 3rd starter and makes me more excited for the season.

Jerry Blevins Agrees To Minor League Deal with A’s

Jerry Blevins
ESPN.com:

Left-handed reliever Jerry Blevins has agreed to a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training.

The news was first reported by the New York Post.

It’s a homecoming for the 35-year-old Blevins, who pitched for the A’s from 2007-13 and was 13-6 with a 3.30 ERA and two saves during that span.

I’ll miss those epic Blevins vs. Harper matchups.
