Mets Option Brett Baty, Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse

The rookies took their best shot, but it wasn’t enough to earn them spots on the Mets’ Opening Day roster. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos have been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, the team announced Saturday, in a wave of roster moves.

Baty excelled at third base this spring, and Vientos had improved his stock with solid work at first and third base.

Keep in mind that Edgardo Escobar, who will no doubt start at 3rd base instead of Baty opening day, is batting .118 with zero HRs and 2 RBI’s during spring training.

Mets Option Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse

The New York Mets have sent catcher Francisco Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse, quashing for now the possibility of putting the prized 21-year-old on the Opening Day roster. Alvarez, who made his major league debut with the Mets near the end of last season, had just three hits in 28 at-bats in Grapefruit League games.

Ranked by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel as the fifth-best prospect in baseball, Alvarez batted .260 with 27 homers and 78 RBIs in a combined 112 minor league games in 2022 at Double-A and Triple-A.

Jose Quintana Could Miss Months with Rib Injury

After a fairly healthy first few weeks of camp, the Mets have encountered their first injury obstacle. They will find out soon how large the obstacle will be — but it appears to be sizable.

Jose Quintana has suffered a small stress fracture on the fifth rib on his left side, the Mets announced Monday. The lefty will travel to New York for further tests, and the club has not yet released a timetable for his return. Even in a best-case scenario, Quintana is likely to miss the start of a season that begins in just over three weeks.

Screw all these new rules that MLB is implementing. Because baseball isn’t losing viewers because of the games being too long. It’s losing viewers because of a combination of reasons that include it’s obsession with analytics, interleague play, lack of rivalries, failure to reach out to minorities in the U.S. when it comes to opportunities in the sport, parity, players who prioritize money over winning and a lack of a real dynasty.

Mets Happy with Starling Marte’s Spring Training Progress

When Starling Marte and Buck Showalter set about building a relationship last season, each needed something from the other: Showalter was seeking a right fielder and two-hole hitter, and Marte valued predictability. Over the course of two conversations, they established an understanding on those points.

“Last year when I got here and he told me that I was gonna play right field, I told him, ‘Fine,’” Marte told SNY on Thursday, through interpreter Alan Suriel. “Like, I’ll play right field, but don’t move me, because I’m trying to get comfortable in a position that I’ve never played before.”

People don’t talk enough about Starling’s Marte’s impact on this team. Indeed, a healthy Marte can lead this team to a World series.
