Patrick Mahomes Sr. Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated . . . for a 3rd Time

5 Feb

This is his 3rd DWI offense which is a third degree felony, meaning he spend 10 years in jail. Granted, he’s a grown-ass man, but if I’m his uber-rich son I’d insist on paying for a car and driver so he’s never behind the wheel again…seriously. Of course too, it’s extra sad that this happens as Patrick Jr. prepares to play in another Super Bowl in a week.

Former Prized Mets Prospect Jarred Kelenic Traded to Braves

4 Dec

Jarred Kelenic

NYPost.com:

The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Jarred Kelenic, pitcher Marco Gonzales and infielder Evan White from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday night for right-handed pitchers Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar.

The move added a veteran lefty to the Braves pitching staff, along with Kelenic, who at one time was one of baseball’s top young prospect.

In the process, Seattle cleared a chunk of salary off its payroll, giving up on Kelenic in order for the Braves to take the contracts of Gonzales and White.

Seattle is sending Atlanta cash as part of the trade.

Kelenic actually had his first decent year in the majors last season. And of course, now that he’s a Brave, he’ll probably win the MYP in 2024 because yunno, we’re jinxed like that.

Jacob DeGrom and the Texas Rangers Win the World Series

2 Nov

injured almost the entire year, actually deGrom did very little to help the Rangers win it all. But hey, the former Mets ace did state very clearly, that part of the reason he left NY for Texas so quick was to be with a ‘winning’ organization. And now that he’s already gotten a ring, his reasoning has proven to be very profound.

That said, because of the way deGrom left the Mets and still being sore over Max Schezer’s playoff failings against the Padres in the playoffs last year, I was rooting for the D’Backs to win (not that I watched a single game) he championship in a World Series that no one outside of Arizona and Texas truly cared about. Either way, congrats to the Rangers on earning their first trophy.

Matt Harvey Jumps into the New York Real Estate Industry

Matt Harvey
FoxNews.com:

Former MLB All-Star pitcher Matt Harvey will be pitching loans instead of baseballs.

After deciding to step away from baseball last month, Harvey has decided to pursue a career in commercial real estate.

According to the New York Post, Harvey has joined Newmark, a real estate firm, as a managing director of the company’s multifamily debt origination and advisory unit.

I still think Harvey should have tried being a closer, but hey I’m glad he’s able to bounce back on his feet so quick and wish him the best.

Matt Harvey Announces His Retirement

5 May

Kind of surprised by Harvey retiring as he’s proven that he can still pitch. I just thought his starter days were over and thus he might try to convert to being a closer. Either way Harvey will be remembered for a few things: him, DeGrom, Wheeler and Syndergaard serving as the nucleus of a new era of Mets starting pitching in the mid-2010’s, his starting the All-star game at Citi Filed back in 2013, his superhero status that was flexed when he graced the cover of Sports Illustrated as “The Dark Night of Gotham”, him talking Terry Collins into pitching the 9th inning of the 5th game of the 2015 World Series (I said it at the time that Collins should’ve refused) and of course, all the injuries and off-the-field drama that pretty cost him his career. Sad that it had to end this way, but hopefully he can find peace with his career choices and move on to live a fruitful and prosperous life.

Matt Harvey Admits To Using Cocaine While With The Angels

15 Feb

Yahoo.com:

Former Los Angeles Angels players Matt Harvey and C.J. Cron admitted to receiving pills from Eric Kay Tuesday during the former team communications official’s trial in relation to Tyler Skaggs’ death. Both players took the stand, where they discussed their own — and Skaggs’ — drug use.

Kay is standing trial in federal court on charges that he gave Skaggs pills laced with fentanyl that led to his death and possessing fentanyl and oxycodone with intent to distribute. Now in its second week, the trial has begun to pull in recent MLB players. Harvey was subpoenaed as Kay’s defense team attempts to convince the jury that Skaggs obtained opioids from more than one source.

Of course, Harvey isn’t the first ML player to admit to using cocaine and he won’t be the last. But the possibility that he might have contributed to a teammate’s death takes his downfall from once starting an All-Star game to a new level.

Prayers for Jeff Innis Who’s Battling Cancer

Jeff Innis
TheChampaignRoom.com:

Family of former Illinois Baseball and New York Mets pitcher Jeff Innis is asking for help to get him home in his final days.

In a GoFundMe posted this week, Innis’ family said he has been battling cancer since 2017 and it recently took a turn for the worst. Family said his treatment at a Houston area hospital is no longer viable, and they’re trying to get Innis home to Atlanta so he can spend his finally days in hospice care with his family. “We appreciate any support you can offer as we bring Jeff home to rest peacefully,” the family wrote.

Innis was a standout reliever who mostly played on some really bad Mets teams in the late 80’s and early 90s. A lifetime Met who played only 7 years in total, I never heard or read a bad thing about him and word has it that he also played in fantasy camps after he retired. It’s not looking good at the moment, but prayers to his family and loved ones.

Carlos Beltran Wants Mets Manager Job, But They Shouldn’t Give It To Him

18 Oct

Do the Mets have to make everything hard? I mean, Beltran played for us, had some great years as a player, is a borderline HOF’er and seems like an all-around likeable guy who would especially appeal to the Latino players on the club. But like Mickey Callaway did before the Mets hired him, Beltran also has zero managing experience (at least Callaway was a pitching coach) and thus would need someone with a wealth of experience to serve as his bench coach. And I get whole ex-players-with-no-managing-experience-becoming-managers being a trend of late, but when you got the kind of experience, know-how, passion and winning that comes with Joe Girardi, to me should be a no-brainer: hire Girardi already.

Mets Finally Give In and Let Noah Syndergaard Have His Own Catcher

18 Sep

Noah Syndergaard
NYPost.com:

The schedule and altitude are convenient excuses, at least publicly, for manager Mickey Callaway to give Noah Syndergaard a personal catcher Wednesday.

Callaway acknowledged Tuesday that Rene Rivera is scheduled to start behind the plate for Syndergaard in the Mets’ series finale at Coors Field. Wilson Ramos was the catcher on Tuesday, a night after Tomas Nido started.

“We feel that is going to be the best thing with this night game/day game and this altitude,” Callaway said, referring to Rivera starting for Syndergaard. “We think that Noah is going to pitch well with him, but we’ll probably go that route tomorrow. There’s a lot of different circumstances: day game, night game, where we’re at we need Noah to pitch well.”

Syndergaard has campaigned to have Rivera or Nido as his catcher. In each of his past two starts — with Ramos behind the plate — the right-hander has struggled, allowing four runs in each outing. Included was four runs over five innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Friday.

Honestly, with only 10 games left and the Mets literally having to win all of them to stand any chance of making the wild-card, does this whole Syndergaard brouhaha even matter anymore? Syndergaard should’ve had his own catcher awhile ago due to teh simple that the difference in numbers for when Ramos doesn’t catch him, make his case. But the GM and manager’s ego and pride and ego got too butt-hurt to allow the team to relent. And now that decision may cost them making the playoffs.
