The Mets Should Let Mickey Callaway Finish The Season

I just don’t see any turnaround to this team. They’re 5 games under .500 as I write this and 9 games out of first place. The bullpen for the most part sucks. Why Robinson Cano is hitting No. 3 in the lineup while batting .230 is beyond reason. Cespedes gets into a freak accident and is done for the season. Dominic Smith is coming back down to earth. The starting pitching is maddeningly inconsistent. And if they’re going to be sellers soon, they might as well try to get the best trade possible for Zack Wheeler. That said, Sunday’s incident with Mickey Callaway and Jason Vargas just highlights, once again, the bleak attitude that this team has dealt with for 30-plus years. And since ownership and the new GM aren’t going anywhere soon, why not just let Mickey finish the season, fire him afterwards and hire Joe Girardi.

Mets Should Give Jason Vargas The Matt Harvey Treatment

15 Apr

You can’t be a Mets fan and not want Dallas Keuchel on your team instead of the anemic Jason Vargas. That being said, Vargas has only had two starts this season, one of which was against the defending NL-East champion Braves (in which he was horrible) and a quality start against the Marlins in which he gave up 2 runs in 5 innings. Vargas also pitched an inning in relief against the Twins that saw him also stink up the joint by allowing 4 runs. That’s 3 outings altogether, 6.1 innings, a 1-0 W-L record and a 14.21 ERA. Yeah, Vargas has for the most part been incredibly bad, but the Mets went into this season hoping that Vargas would continue pitching to the promise he displayed in the 2nd half of last year. So they’re not going to give on him after only 3 outings, no matter what free agent is still out there. It also helps Vargas’ case that the team has gotten off to a nice start to the new season, being only a half-game out of 1st place. Then too, it took 8 outings and 4 bad starts for the Mets to give up on Matt Harvey last year. I think it’s only fair that Vargas, unless the team goes on a major losing streak, gets the same opportunity.

As for Vargas’ appearance in this now infamous interview that took place after the Braves loss…I got him looking like Jerry Springer than anyone else.

Mets To Skip Jason Vargas’ Next Start

ESPN.com:

The New York Mets will skip struggling left-hander Jason Vargas’ next turn in the rotation on Tuesday.

Manager Mickey Callaway said Friday that Vargas will instead throw a simulated game before the Mets host Toronto. Vargas is 0-3 with a 13.86 ERA since returning from surgery on his right hand.

“You’ve got to look yourself in the mirror and just understand that the job wasn’t getting done,” Vargas said after completing a bullpen session before Friday night’s game at Philadelphia. “You have the opportunity to work on a few things and get some reps in that you wouldn’t normally be able to get in. I understood, totally got it. I need to be able to go out there and help the ball team win and those past three starts haven’t been it.”

I know that he was an All-star just last year and available at an affordable price when he became a free-agent, but I never really understood the need to sign Vargas this past off-season. Robert Gsellman or Seth Lugo could’ve easily been the Mets 5th starter going into the season and I would’ve rather had another quality left-handed reliever to go with Jerry Blevins, than yet another starting pitcher. That said, to say that Vargas has been atrocious this season would be an understatement. So the Mets should be willing to try anything to help him clear his head and work on his mechanics right, including skipping a start.
